In this sequel to Firebug, although the new Coterie (magical mafia) leader isn't using Ava's fire powers to constantly maim and torture, Ava doesn't trust him. But as a magical plague of mindless violence spreads, it's up to Coterie members to work together to stop it. The rushed conclusion is predictable, but the themes of family, trust, and opening up to life resonate.

Refusing to kill a family friend using her ability to start fires with her mind pits Ava against the magical mafia that enslaved her and used her as an assassin. The novel's straightforward plot builds slowly and the initial world-building relies on a lot of exposition. But when the action starts it's fast paced and exciting.
